Animal Physiotherapy Services
Canine Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy for small animals may be for the treatment of a specific condition or for routine maintenance in performance and working animals.
The physiotherapy assessment begins with obtaining a detailed history from the owner, followed by gait assessment, a ‘hands-on’ assessment of the patient, and specific tests such as range of motion, joint and neurological tests.
After the consultation, Owners will receive an individualised home exercise programme for their animal.
Canine Fitness Classes
OPTIMA's Canine Fitness Classes are held in a 6-week block attendance course with 45-minute sessions. The course hosts 3-4 dogs at a time.
We're deeply passionate about dog fitness and overall well-being and believe baseline fitness is essential for all dogs, especially those involved in a dog sport. We also believe that fitness should be fun and available to all dogs regardless of age, fitness level, ability or strength.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a gentle, evidence-informed therapy used by animal physiotherapists to support pain relief and recovery in small animals. It involves the placement of very fine needles at specific points on the body to stimulate the nervous system, improve circulation, and encourage the release of natural pain-relieving chemicals.
Commonly used for conditions such as arthritis, musculoskeletal injuries, and neurological disorders, acupuncture can help reduce pain, improve mobility, and support overall well-being as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation plan.
Laser Therapy
Laser therapy, also known as low-level laser therapy (LLLT), is a non-invasive treatment used by animal physiotherapists to support healing and reduce pain in small animals. It uses specific wavelengths of light to stimulate cells, improve circulation, and accelerate tissue repair.
Commonly used for conditions such as arthritis, soft tissue injuries, and post-surgical recovery, laser therapy helps reduce inflammation, ease discomfort, and restore mobility. LLLTT is a gentle and effective option for dogs and other small animals undergoing rehabilitation.
Equine Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy for horses may be for the treatment of a specific condition or for routine maintenance in performance horses.
The physiotherapy assessment begins with obtaining a detailed history from the owner, followed by gait assessment, a ‘hands-on’ assessment of the patient, and specific tests such as range of motion, joint and neurological tests.
Owners will be provided with an individualised home exercise programme for their animal following the consultation.
Conditions Treated
IVDD & Spinal Conditions
Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) is a painful spinal condition that occurs when the discs between your dog’s vertebrae (back bones) become damaged, bulge, or rupture. These discs normally act as cushions, absorbing shock and allowing smooth movement of the spine.
When a disc presses on the spinal cord, it can disrupt nerve signals between the brain and body, leading to pain, reduced mobility, and in severe cases, paralysis.
Spinal Conditions refer to a range of disorders affecting the vertebrae, intervertebral discs, spinal cord, and surrounding soft tissues. These conditions can impact your dog’s ability to move, coordinate, and function comfortably.
The spine plays a critical role in both movement and nerve communication, meaning even minor issues can have widespread effects on the body.
Fractures
Fractures (broken bones) are a common injury in dogs and can range from minor cracks to complex breaks requiring surgical repair.
With the right veterinary care and rehabilitation, most dogs can make a strong recovery and return to normal activity. Physiotherapy plays a key role in restoring strength, mobility, and confidence throughout the healing process.
Injury Rehabilitation
Injury rehabilitation focuses on helping your dog recover safely from musculoskeletal injuries, return to normal function, and build resilience to prevent future issues.
Whether your dog is recovering from an injury, surgery, or is actively involved in sport, a structured rehabilitation and fitness programme can make a significant difference to their long-term health, mobility, and performance.
Hip & Elbow Dysplasia
Hip and elbow dysplasia are common developmental joint conditions that can significantly impact your dog’s comfort, mobility, and long-term quality of life. These conditions occur when the joints do not form correctly, leading to instability, abnormal movement, and progressive wear over time.
